Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I have to join the Union?
You must join Local 439 within 31 calendar days of employment.  Former Teamsters must deposit their withdrawal cards or transfer membership immediately upon re-employment.
What are the start-up fees?
All new members pay a $250 initiation fee (effective 11/01/01) and one-time building assessment of $20.  Monthly dues vary by hourly wage and company.
When will I need to pay the fees?
All fees must be paid within 31 calendar days of employment.  However, a weekly or bi-weekly payment plan is available upon request.  A few companies offer automatic payroll deduction of  initiation fees. Also, we accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.
Will my employer deduct my monthly dues from my paycheck?
Most companies offer dues checkoff (automatic payroll deductions). If the option is available, you will need to fill out a form to authorize your employer to deduct the dues from your paycheck.
My probationary period is 6 months.  Why do I have to join within a month?
Local 439 negotiates a contract on behalf of ALL employees of the collective bargaining group.  Wages, working conditions, and many union benefits are covered under the contract, which is a legally binding agreement between the employer and the union.  Your contract requires that ALL employees of the collective group become and remain members of the union.  By joining the union in a timely manner. you will be informed of your rights and benefits as an employee and a member.
How do I actively get involved in my union?
Local 439 welcomes all members to participate in the activities of their union by attending meetings,  voting on important issues, taking part in boycotting and organizing efforts, and by building unity and solidarity.  Please contact the Local Union if you would like to join the Local 439 Activist Network.
How do I stop my membership if am no longer working?
Apply for a withdrawal card
immediately upon termination of employment.  By withdrawing your membership, you will not be charged union dues while you are not working and it will freeze your membership until you return to work in a Teamster capacity.  You may apply in person, by mail, or on-line.
